After a scoreless first half, East Carolina scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat sixth-seeded Houston, 2-0, in the second quarterfinal game of the 2002 Conference USA Women's Soccer Tournament at Charlotte's Transamerica Field on Wednesday (Nov. 6) afternoon.

The third-seeded Pirates scored in the 59th minute, when Meghan McCallion connected on a shot off a long-lead pass from goalkeeper Michelle Kmiotek to give ECU a 1-0 lead. In the 81st minute, Amanda Duffy sealed the win when she collected a Krystel Pabey pass and connected on a shot from 10 yards out.

The Pirates out-shot the Cougars, 12-3, on the day, including 6-0 in shots-on-goal. Houston sophomore midfielder Nikke Hawkins, who was named to the Second Team All-Conference, lead the Cougars with two shots.

"I thought we did a pretty good of controlling the flow of the game early playing into wind," ECU head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "I told our team at halftime that we need to get ball into the box and we were fortunate to get two goals doing that."

Houston finishes the 2002 campaign with an 8-8-3 overall record, including 4-4-3 in league action.
